In the studio of painter Khosrow Karami, in Shar-e Rey, a conservative stronghold south of Tehran, a worker completes the gigantic portrait of the Islamic Republic’s founding father, the Ayatollah Khomeini, and his successor, Ali Khamenei. The Iranian regime has painted the walls of the whole country with a quite generous official iconography, the better to consolidate its legitimacy. The frescoes picture the political leaders and the faces of the many martyrs killed during the 8-year war against Iraq.
Massoud Ghahramani, with the white hair, sells textiles at the bazaar. He regularly has a picnic with his entire family in front of the mausoleum of the ayatollah Khomeini, in the south of Teheran, right next to the cemetery of Behesht Zahra.
Every 4th of July, crowds come to the mausoleum of the Imam Khomeini for the anniversary of his death.
