Mehrdad, a shopkeeper in the Bazaar, leaves Tehran every Friday to discover the extraordinary landscapes of his country and to go hunting, a passion he took up during his military service in the desert by the Afghan frontier, where he was to stop drug-trafficking convoys. “We were 50 or 60 soldiers in this special unit,” he says, “and we were bored to death. Our commanding officers were scared like hell by the drug lords and they’d rather avoid any contact with them. Anyway, we made so much noise and lit up so many lights that avoiding us was a walk in the park for the Afghans. They had good drivers, they were well equipped, and they knew the desert like the back of their hands.”

Mehrdad, here in the Albourz Mountains, between Teheran and the Caspian Sea, is passionate about excursions in his country’s deserts and mountains.
