Synopsis

Youths gathering around an empty swimming pool, as Internet-savvy as they are conversant with Hafez’s poetry; an anti-Zionist carpet seller yelling “Death to America” yet getting rich thanks to his shop in Dallas; veiled women making a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mashad to thank the Imam Reza for a successful divorce; a defecting mullah lecturing about human values… Such is Iran’s fascinating theater, where everyone plays several parts on several stages but in only one language, that of the tarouf, a sophisticated form of hypocrisy and politeness, in which “Welcome to my place” translates as “Walk on my eyes.”
